Welcome to RPM

RPM (race paints by Martin) are specialists in motorsport helmet design and painting.
From concept through to painting and delivering the finished helmet.

In a world where most karts and race suits look alike, a custom designed helmet is your identity and a chance to express your individuality.

All designs are created with the driver to ensure your helmet is truly unique.

All tastes and styles are catered for, from a simple retro layout to a modern day masterpiece with multiple effects.

About RPM

Hi, I’m Martin and I have a passion for painting helmets for kart racers.

As a small child I was fascinated by F1 driver’s helmet designs and at the tender age of six, I could identify every driver just from their helmet design!

I raced karts at national level in the 90’s and as my school friends will confirm, every school book was full of doodles of how I’d like my helmet painted which is where my love for retro style designs comes from.

After leaving education I worked for several companies as a graphic designer until I set up my own design and print business in 2013 but karting had unfortunately long since taken a back seat... Until 2023 when an old karting friend convinced me to come out of retirement!!

That plain white helmet was just staring at me. With a bit of spare time, a trip to Halfords for some "rattle cans" and after watching a load of YouTube videos, I set about making my own creation. The positive feedback I received led to me investing in a more professional set up, including spray guns, air brushes and a dedicated space to carry out the work.

And so RPM (Race Paints by Martin) was born.

How it works...

After your initial contact, there will be a consultation with you to find out your requirements in order to give you a price and time frame for the job to be completed.

Certain aspects affect the price and lead time of your helmet which will be discussed with you.
Special colours and effects add complexity to the job and this is reflected in the price.

Once you are happy to proceed a 2D computer mock up of your design will be supplied for your aproval.

Design

There is nothing better than bringing your ideas to life! You are welcome to send your ideas, from a simple scribble to a fully detailed brief.

However, should you need some help, that is also possible, with a background in graphic design and a love for motorsport helmets, working with you to come up with a unique design that shows your individuality is not a problem.

Before any paint is put on your helmet you will be sent a 2D computer render of your design for you to approve or suggest changes.

If you would like a template to draw out your design please email with your make and model of helmet.

Prep, Paint & Finish

Once you are happy with your design, send your helmet and the real work will begin.

First the helmet is stripped back and any parts that paint should not get to are masked.

Following this the helmet is sanded and primed before the design is taped out onto the helmet ready for painting. Towards the end of the process, any logos and effects are added before a clear protective layer. If you have opted for any accessories these will also be added before re-assembling the helmet ready for delivery.

You will be sent photos and a video "fly-around" of the finished design so there wont be any surprises when you receive your finished helmet.

Finishing Touches

Our range of helmet accessories are guaranteed to add some colour to your helmet. Whether you want to change your Visor Screws to match your visor,  Vent Mesh, or you want to include the signature TrimZ rubbers to the base and eyeport of your helmet to make your design stand out.

RPM are stockists of Antman products. So even if you haven't had your helmet painted, you can still purchase from the shop to fit yourself, or please enquire about the fitting service.

FAQ's

It is understandable that you may have many questions that you want answering before you commit to sending your helmet off and trusting it to be painted to perfection. Below are some of the most common questions.
If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact ask.

The price of your work will depend upon its complexity. The amount of colours and special effects will have a bearing on the final price. This will be discussed with you at the consultation stage.

To book a slot with a 50% deposit is required. The remaining balance becomes due before despatch of your helmet. You will of course receive pictures and a video of the helmet before we request the final balance.

Depending upon current work load and the time of year, there may be a short waiting list of a month or two. Once your design has been confirmed and your helmet has arrived at RPM, it will normally take 3-4 weeks for your helmet to be ready. At the consultation stage you will be informed of our waiting period. Please note, some effects may add additional time to the lead time.

There is an additional charge for this service but if you have no idea what you want as your design, it can be created for you. During the consultation we will discuss things like colours and any examples you like and a design will be supplied for you to approve. (It's not cool to copy someone else's design so direct copies of someone else's design is a no no).

You will always get better results from a brand new helmet. However, whilst it is preferable to start with a brand new helmet, it is possible to paint your current one. Please note, there might be an additional prep fee depending upon the condition it is in, which will be confirmed with you after your helmet has been received and inspected.

Of course! If you're local or don't mind the drive.  Meeting new clients face to face is great!

Yes, Arai, Bell and Stilo helmets are available. You will need to know your helmet size for your chosen brand. Please note, full payment is required for the helmet in advance and liability cannot be accepted if you are unhappy with the fit.
